If the top 3 wide receivers (Cooper|Kevin White|White) are gone, then this should get interesting. I flip-flopped between Todd Gurley and Breshnan Perriman as they are both the type of players the Dolphins need to take the next step. Perriman could step right into our dink and dunk offense and take a short pass to the house ... things we tried to do with Mike Wallace. That being said, one thing to consider is that Seattle would not be as good as they are without Marshawn Lynch. What Lynch and Gurley do is give their teams a red zone threat, and they can close out games in the 4th quarter by gutting out tough yards and preserving a lead. To me, this is a major weakness of our Dolphins and needs to be addressed. Losing games in the 4th quarter has got to be fixed. Also, let's not forget that he can return kickoffs and fill a need there as well. And he doesn't fumble.
While I am not a "trade down" kind of a person, if the top 3 receivers are gone then it would be idea for Miami to trade down a few slots and grab Perriman and recoup a 3rd round pick. At a time when a team's draft strategy is kept a secret, someone is leaking information on Gurley and everyone (including me) has bought into it. The Dolphins may be hoping that Gurley could be there at 14 and another team wanting to be the next Seattle Seahawks would offer their 1st and 3rd for our #14 pick. It is a possibility. |

If one of the Big 3 wide receivers drops, then the Dolphins would take him. Miami believes that there are 19 prospects with 1st round grades, and Gurley is one of those players. Considered the best back to come out in the draft since Adrian Peterson, I don't see Miami passing on Gurley. He gives Miami that BIG back they are looking for, one that has big play ability, can catch the ball out of the backfield and is a dangerous kickoff return man. He would combine with Lamar Miller to give the Dolphins an very potent combo and give them that back that can help grind the clock late in a game or gain that short yardage of top of his homerun ability. There is a durability concern, as Gurley missed 3 games due to an ankle injury in 2013 and tore his ACL in late Novemeber 2014 against Auburn. He just visited Indianapolis for a follow up visit for prospects with injuries, and his knee has progressed to the point where he is given a very good chance of being ready for Training Camp. OT/OG La'el Collins, DT Danny Shelton & CB Marcus Peters could be considered here as well.

(Trade Back) Miami gets what they want and is able to trade out of slot 14, picking up another 2nd round pick and is still able to get Perriman at 24. Breshad gives us what we're missing right now. A big physical yardage monster who boasts a ridiculous 36 inch vertical and a sub 4.3 forty time for a man of his size. He's a big play waiting to happen. He can win deep and is also capable of taking a screen pass to the house. Has some issues with concentration drops but almost every analyst I've read doesn't seem to think it's a major concern and that it can be corrected. Perriman is a legit stretch the field pass catcher and would replace that part of the game that was lost when the Dolphins traded Mike Wallace this off-season. Perriman’s best attributes however might be just what the Dolphins want, especially under Joe Philbin. He has a very high class stature off-the-field. Probably the most impressive thing to me is that he lost star quarterback Blake Bortles this past season and he still played lights out football with a lesser talent throwing him the ball. A healthy Jordan with Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills and DeVante Parker could make for a deadly offense.

If that's not possible, then adding another early-round OL prospect may happen. It's not flashy, but a starting 5 of Albert/Turner (Thomas?)/Pouncey/Collins/James could be one of the best in the NFL.

But he also showed the ability to come down with really difficult catches, and he's a big-play threat with his combination of size (6-foot-2, 212 pounds) and speed (sub-4.3 40 time at his pro day).

Cortland Finnegan was cut and eventually retired after struggling as the starter opposite Brent Grimes last season. The Dolphins have used picks on Jamar Taylor (2nd round in 2013), Will Davis (3rd round in 2013), and Walt Aikens (4th round in 2014) in recent drafts, but none of them have played much so far in their respective careers. Taylor and Davis have played 345 and 200 snaps respectively in 2 seasons in the league combined, while Aikens played 64 snaps as a rookie. With Grimes going into his age 33 season, now seems like a good time to draft another cornerback to play opposite him and eventually take over for him as the #1 guy.

This choice could be a curveball since Dennis Hickey proved to be a bit of a wild card in his first year at the helm in Miami. However, if Louisville WR DeVante Parker is still available it might be an easy decision because he would be an ideal compliment to Jarvis Landry and Kenny Stills. Last year when just about every top underclassmen wide receiver bolted for the pros Parker was one of the few who actually opted to return for his senior season. Things got off to a rough start as Parker missed the first seven games with a foot injury but he came back with a vengeance and finished the year with a flourish. Parker is big and strong with excellent hands, terrific body control and ball skills as well as sneaky vertical speed. Even though the Dolphins used their first round pick last year on a blocker there are still some DeVante Parker | Louisville Cardinals issues on the interior of the offensive line and either Brandon Scherff of Iowa or La’el Collins of L.S.U. could be the solution that they have been searching for. Michigan St. CB Trae Waynes could prove tempting as well because youngsters Will Davis and Jamar Taylor have been disappointments thus far. Linebacker might actually be the most pressing need in Miami but the value just isn’t there at this point. Georgia RB Todd Gurley could be a darkhorse since durability is a concern with Lamar Miller.

Right now it's Pro-Bowler Brent Grimes and a whole lot of uncertainty at cornerback for the Miami Dolphins. Brice McCain was brought in from Pittsburgh who should add some stability, but just having him along with thus far inconsistent third rounders Jamar Taylor and Will Davis isn't going to be enough for them to pass on the draft's top ranked cornerback at 14. No cornerback in college football was left on an island more over the past two years than Trae Waynes; and the results were outstanding, only two touchdowns allowed. Koa Misi is still on board, but what the Dolphins really need to improve the second wave of their defense is a player who can not only rush the passer, but also cover screens and curl/flat stuff. Dupree hit the national map when he ran a 4.56 40 with a 1.60 10-yard split at the scouting combine—not half-bad for a 6’4”, 269-pound individual—but it's his versatility that will make him stick and stay in the NFL. Dupree has the capability to blitz off the edge on one play, and cover a slot receiver on the very next.

The more I hear about Gurley’s recovery from five-month-old ACL surgery, the more I think he could be ready for opening day. Or at the least, be pretty much back to normal by mid-October. The surgery doesn’t worry me a bit long-term. Gurley is 20 years old and the closest thing to a dominant in-line and outside-the-tackles running back to come out in the draft in several years. There are no guarantees about any player in any year, but Gurley is going to make a bunch of yards that aren’t there for normal backs. He’s the kind of back Miami hasn’t had in a long time—even though the Dolphins had a pretty good running game last year, 12th in the league. |
